How to care for Vintage Furs?
Vintage Fur always needs a bit of loving, especially when it has been enjoyed by a previous owner.
Always start with an evaluation of the condition of the fur when received. Determine the way it has been worn, the way it has been stored, if there are any damages and what was applied onto the fur (i.e. sprays and cleaners) to know what needs to be done to bring the fur to its best conditions possible.
Being that vintage Furs are worn by a previous owners, they will have characteristics created from their original conditions. Make sure the fur has not been stressed or stretched due to the garment being worn on the incorrect body size. Stressed and stretched fur can lead if not done already to splits and tears of the fur. If the fur does have rips or tears, check if they are on a seam and if the tear was due to the fur being dried out or just by being pulled too tight around the body. Having the tear on the seam is fixable by opening the lining and then stitching the fur from the skin underneath. When the fur skin is still in great condition, its so much easier to stitch and the repair will stay intact. You may also get hockey tape as it's a material base and you can put it on top of your stitching to add that extra protection. Please note, if the fur is dried out, you will notice the stitching will not stay and the fur will continue to fall apart.
Fur in general is actually very easy to store and to be enjoyed. Furs need to breathe and I cannot stressed this enough. Stay away from any materials such as plastics to store your furs. Material base bags, cloths such as a pillow cases is the perfect place to put your furs in and then into a cool dark place like a closet. Simple as that, furs will stay in their condition when they can breathe and can be enjoyed for a long time. When ready to wear, you can hang it up and put it outside on a nice breezy day to freshen it up.
IF you do get a vintage Fur that does have a scent on it, we have a few tips we've received by customers that have been a great success. Vintage furs do capture smells as the furs locks them in. You can brush the fur in the direction of the fur to remove any dust or particles that may be trapped in the fur. You can use a light scented spray like Febreze which should not harm the fur and will eliminate any previous smells. You also can hang the fur outside on a nice breezy day to blow out any dust or smells that may still remain on the fur. Finally, getting the fur professional cleaned and glazed is also suggested as this will elevate the look of your fur. Try to get this done off season as the cost might be lower and that you will have your fur in time to enjoy it for the winter season.
Is it OK to wear Vintage Furs?
We have been selling vintage furs for over 20 year's and we get this question often. We believe, continuing the use of any pre-owned item instead of putting them into land waste is helping our environment. Vintage Furs are no different when it comes to this belief.
Vintage furs have less chemicals as they are made 100% with natural materials, they will never go out of fashion as they provide practical use with being the warmest garment in the coldest weather which cannot be compared with any other materials.
Being that Vintage Furs are used and the process of making the garment had already been done, we are reducing the demand to create additional. fur garments.
Vintage furs do have characteristics that stand out which are unique. Most people understand the history of the vintage fur (also knowing they are used), therefore a mindset that it’s OK to wear and feeling safe while wearing vintage fur has been created.
